sIFR & Suckerfish Menus

I’m working on a project that required both sIFR headings for blog posts, and suckerfish-style drop down menus (use this instead of traditional suckerfish – it makes use of the JQuery library). Problem is, the drop down menus fall behind the flash movies that make up the headings.

Solution?

Add one line to your sifr-config.js file, thusly:

sIFR.replace(sifrMovieName, { selector: 'h2', css: {'.sIFR-root': { 'color': '#0076A3', 'background-color':'#D5E6ED', 'text-decoration':'none' }}, wmode: 'transparent' <-- This is the line! });

It works perfectly!

Photoshop Tricks

I took this from an old post of min on ‘easworld’:http://easworld.org that we are shifting. I forgot about this cool technique

I don’t do much image editing, and when I do I tend just to move the little sliders around when I want to make an image lighter or brighter.

My mum, however, sent me these tips and they work BRILLIANTLY.

Thanks mum :)

LIGHTEN IMAGE

  1. open image
  2. duplicate image
  3. change duplicated image to grayscale (best way to do this is under mode go to lab colour and in the channels pallette drag the a. which takes the b. into the trash and then drag the alpha 2 into the trash. This gives you more contrast.)
  4. gaussian blur this pic to about 2
  5. invert to get negative image
  6. Go back to original image (leaving the other open) and under select Load
Selection. It automatically loads the inverted image specs.
  7. Copy (Apple J) new layer
  8. Fill with 50% gray, colour dodge and click Preserve transparency
  9. Take opacity back as desired (6 key)

And it will look a zillion times better than doing it any other way.

DARKEN IMAGE

  1. Open image
  2. Create a new layer and fill with 50% gray transparency off
  3. Change blending mode to colour burn
  4. Decrease opacity
  5. Add more light with the airbrush, large soft brush, opacity 5% and paint on colour burn area

OVER EXPOSED

  1. Load image
  2. To select luminosity hold Apple Option ~
  3. Copy to new layer and just check to see what was copied
  4. Change the opacity of the new layer to colour burn blending mode
  5. Double click layer and choose fill opacity = 60%
  6. Lower layer opacity to suit

These are of course directed at Mac users, but windows keystrokes are pretty similar.

Album Cover Meme

I don’t usually take part in internet memes, but this one was great.

The rules are

  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random – The first article title on the page is the name of your band.
  2. www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 – The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.
  3. www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ – The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

So, I got Lew Jetton as my wikipedia page,

I hope that when I die, people say about me, ‘Boy, that guy sure owed me a lot of money.

Jack Handey (1949 – ), Deep Thoughts

As my quote, and this as my Flickr image.

And so I present:

New Queensland Government design is now live

The design I completed while I was working for the Queensland Government has just been launched, and I must say that overall I am really happy with it. I left there at the end of December, and my design has taken four and a half months to go live, but that’s government for you!

This redesign involved both a visual and structural overhaul, the result of painstakingly precise usability testing and justification. Code produced is valid XHTML strict but the CSS does not appear to validate at this time

All that aside, well done to all the people involved, now to take a screenshot and put it on my resume.

Oxygen Kiosk - New design, hand crafted with love

At the beginning of this year, I moved to Sydney with my son to live with my partner Kelly, and so far it has been the best decision that I have made. Sydney is awesome! So many cool things to do, eat and drink. Yum.

To coincide with my big move, and subsequent change of employers (I work for myself now!), Jaymis and I redesigned and launched our baby and I must say, I really like it.

I began the design some months ago when I was first playing with Blueprint CSS (which is awesome – three cheers for Olav ) and so was based on waaay old Blueprint code. Thanks to the new modular code system, I was able to upgrade with no worries at all!

So the site is live, I’m working as the Oxygen Kiosk full time now, so contact us for your next web development quote!
